Enterprise Content Management
Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is any of the strategies and technologies employed for managing the capture, storage, security, revision control, retrieval, distribution, preservation and destruction of documents and content. ECM is especially concerned with the content imported into or generated from within an organisation in the course of its operation, it includes the control of access to this content from within and outside of the organisation's processes.
As ECM matures into early mainstream status, climbing the ‘Slope of Enlightenment’ on the 2006 Gartner hype Cycle for Content Management, companies are being called upon to take inventory of their content anagement applications and abilities. Most companies have multiple content management platforms usually from different vendors and used to varying effect. The first step towards consolidation is considering a solution that is long term.
